Conceptual tools of this project consist of structural layer – parametric canopy roofing produced with Rhino and Grasshopper and the analytical layer – geometrical translation of the palm tree anatomy. The aim of the project is to design a roofing for Middle Eastern city which can provide multiple functions such as shading and other recreational facilities in out-door and semi-out-door areas.
The most extraordinary part of the project is the actual material finish of the gridshell as it is designed to be coated in gold. Gridshell organic structure floats over the grandiose building entrance facing the plaza, and at the same time cuts through the rationally conceived box-like architecture of the info and design centre that is panelled with gold to unify the overall outlook of the building complex. Additional functions of the main building object include café, lounge, exhibition spaces and service facilities.
Gold is regionally seen as a symbol of power, strength, perfection and balance, while the palm tree is vernacular symbol of resources and heritage.
Gridshell canopy roof is designed to cover the atrium creating the spaces underneath it. These incorporate fluctuating open-air city exhibitions as well as multiple retail areas.

Parametric definition for design automation
The approach involves the use of parametric coordinates. This makes further form analysis and optimization possible (e.g. by use of Karamba and Galapagos).
Expressions
